Before 811spotter, Jeff and I spent our careers building technology for the construction industry.

We helped launch the first and most successful cloud-based solution from one of the industry’s pioneering software vendors. There were other early internet-first companies—but most didn’t make it. We did, and we helped change how the industry thought about technology.

Jeff focused on product. I focused on sales and marketing. We were fortunate to help lead those efforts during a pivotal time, working alongside a great team and strong leadership.

That company was eventually acquired by Trimble, where we had long and productive careers. Years later, we stepped away to start something new.

We called it Lantern—a data and analytics platform for construction. The product was strong, but the market wasn’t quite ready. Timing was a challenge. But the experience taught us how to listen closely, move quickly, and recognize when we’d found a real, urgent problem.

 

The Problem That Found Us

We came across an 811 ticket list and started asking around. Was this something contractors were struggling with?

Some said no—too messy, too tangled to solve.

One friend got so frustrated he hung up on me.

He called back later to apologize—and then told me what was really going on:

“We do insanely complex projects. But this dumb administrative process is what’s keeping me up at night.”

He knew what was at stake, and we did too.

We got to work.

 

A System That Hasn’t Worked for Contractors

The more we learned, the clearer it became: this isn’t just a contractor problem.

The 811 process is full of good intentions, but contractors especially needed better tools, more clarity, and a greater sense of control.

That focus helped us become the first—and now the largest—ticket management solution built for contractors.

 

Why We Joined Irth

To improve a system like this, you need to be in it.

Irth is the most established name in damage prevention technology. And with that comes strong opinions, but that’s exactly why we joined. We believe damage prevention can work better for everyone—especially the ones actually doing the work.

Irth gives us the platform, reach, and infrastructure.

We bring the contractor’s voice, speed, and conviction.

 

What’s Next

We know 811spotter means something to our customers. That’s why we’ll continue to use the brand where it makes sense and adds value. As we grow, the way we show up may evolve—but our commitment to contractors never will.

This next chapter gives us the opportunity to:

  • Build even better tools
  • And help align an industry that’s long been working at cross-purposes
