Accelerating Pipeline Crossing Reviews

How Enbridge cut crossing review times from hours to minutes using Irth's AIP platform.

Key Results

12x Faster Reviews

Trivial crossings reduced from ~1 hour to ~ 5 minutes.

$100,000+

in annual cost savings.

Eliminated 2-week turnaround

for rupture pressures and growth projections.

Consistent, defensible analysis

Automated calculations use the same data sources and methodology every time.

Rapid adoption

75+ users onboarded immediately; 257 additional users from Operations and Lands & Right-of-Way teams requested & granted access to AIP.

Regulatory recognition

Report shared with the local regulator and was very well received.

Context

7
One of North America's largest gas pipeline operators, managing extensive infrastructure across the U.S. and Canada.

data-analysis

All required inspection and assessment data is already stored in AIP, but wasn't accessible in a format aligned with the team's review workflow.

Challenge

Before Enbridge worked with Irth to develop the Crossings Report:

  • Manual data assembly: Engineers pulled pipeline listings, located kiloposts in mapping software, and rebuilt anomaly summaries in spreadsheets for every crossing review
  • Two-week turnaround: Rupture pressures and growth projections required separate requests to Integrity Engineering
  • Hours lost per review: Each review took one to four hours; complex crossings could take multiple days
  • No search or flexibility: No location search, no unit toggle, no ability to evaluate multiple crossing ranges at once
  • Inconsistent analysis: Spreadsheet-based workflows created variability across reviews

Solution

Enbridge partnered with Irth to build a dedicated Crossings Review Report within the AIP platform — automating the retrieval, calculation, and presentation of all integrity data needed for crossing evaluations.

Key capabilities included:

Automated data compilation: 12+ critical integrity data points across corrosion, dents, and cracks

Anomaly-level drill-down: Feature type, dimensions, and remaining wall thickness

Flexible unit and location search: Imperial/Metric toggle and milepost/kilopost lookup

Multi-range analysis: Evaluate multiple crossing segments simultaneously

Crossings Report

“The Crossings Report allows our team to quickly check whether there's anything of concern at a pipeline crossing without having to wait on additional analysis or manually assemble the data.”
