Using Depth Probability Charts to Make Informed Decisions

Corrosion remains one of the most significant threats to oil and gas transmission pipelines, making accurate monitoring and forecasting essential for integrity management. Inline inspection (ILI) data provides the foundation for understanding time-dependent corrosion behavior, but reliable predictions require accounting for measurement uncertainty across multiple inspections. Building on prior work, we developed a probabilistic corrosion growth model that assumes normally distributed depth errors and generates probability distributions for both future defect depth and growth, rather than relying on single deterministic growth rates. Applied to a large, multi-pipeline historical ILI dataset, the model demonstrates how operators can evaluate the likelihood of future corrosion severity at both the anomaly and system level, enabling more informed prioritization decisions based on probability-of-exceedance thresholds defined by engineering criteria.
